Greenspace with Bike Ramp
A new trail entrance ramp to the Midtown Greenway at Bloomington Avenue has been envisioned in the shape of an amphitheater. In addition to providing critical Greenway access to and from the busy Hispanic commercial node on Lake Street a block away, it would provide greenspace for the local community, and serve as an event location for nearby Heart of the Beast Mask and Puppet Theatre or Mercado Central. The image above was created by Cermak Rhoades Architects for the Coalition as a way to communicate the community’s vision for this space.
This new ramp would be equidistant from other Greenway entrance ramps at 13th and 18th Avenues, and provide better access to a bike route planned by the City on Bloomington Avenue. The Midtown Greenway Coalition, Midtown Phillips, and the Bloomington Cedar Lake Commercial Association have been advocating for this entrance ramp for about five years, with all three parties pledging funding at one point or another to help get it done. Potential partners for implementation include: City of Minneapolis, Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board, Trust for Public Land, and perhaps Hennepin County and/or the Metropolitan Council if future rail transit station functions are anticipated here.
